Were the materials that the southwest American Indians used for Baskets seasonal?
Well, this is a great question. If you look at antique basketry from the areas from the apache lands today, you'll find alot of larger baskets made from cedar bark, smaller ones were made from long grasses and twigs. Now if you're talking about the Pima tribes then you're talking about smaller and finer grassed baskets that were sometimes covered in pine pitch or even tar in some cases. Then you have the middle tribes, Hohokam and others who used other grassesand twigs, sometimes pine needles as well for ttheirbaskets , some grasses are colored by dying or by cooking,....some are jjust different colored grasses...saw grass,.....long reeded grasses, some vines and a few other vegetable fabrics. There is evidence of boiled cambian woods from soft woods, pine, alder, aspin, birch,etc......then you have to include the bark boxes in this Group as well and parfleche type containers from leather and fine skins or tight traded fabric. Today American indians usually have alot more materials to workk with (obviously) as opposed to 200 to 1200 years ago...and alot of the materials they used back then are hard to find today or are even endangered species type plants.
