I'm going to a bar mitzvah and I have no idea what the expectations are... ?
I have absolutely no idea whatsoever what is expected when someone goes to a bar mitzvah.
I'm not going to be there for the synagogue. Just the party-part.
So I'm just wondering if the following outfit would be considered appropriate:
-A pink, black, and white plaid skirt that is about an inch above the knee... maybe less.
-A pair of tall leather black boots.
-A pink or a different coloured long sleeve shirt.
Is that appropriate?
Also, is there anything else expected?
Wear what you would wear if you were going to a church. It doesn't have to be extremely formal, but usually skirt or dress is appropriate. Probably less skin the better, especially this time of the year but pink is fine I suppose, especially if your just going to the party part. I say dress as if you were going to a graduation ceremony, or something like that. People, especially the church members and close friends and family, will be rather well dressed but not much is expected from the guests!
The most important thing is though, you definitely should bring a gift. Bar/Bat-mitzvahs are huge gift-giving extravaganzas, they don't need to be personal gifts if you aren't really close, generally money in an envelope or a gift certificate (for somewhere appropriate) is perfect and most common. There will be a place to put your gifts and the bar mitzvah won't be opening them in front of anybody.
