whats is your favorite sword?
like scimatars , rapiers, longswords,shortswords,gladius's,hook swords,samurai swords,ninja blades. or other if it is other than please tell me what it is and describe it. my favorite type of sword is the samurai sword.
the gladius is a cool weapon. The Romans dominated their opponents, even the ones who used longer swords, because they used to charge in close formations, using their large shields to batter their enemy, and when an opening revealed itself, they stabbed. They would get in real close with their enemy, making long slashing swords a liability. There were even accounts of Roman soldiers who, on the charge, would leap into their enemy, denying them the range advantage of a spear or long sword, thrusting their gladius into them as the fell on top of them. It was frequently commented that Romans had a sort of disdain for foes who wielded long swords, as their tried and true techniques (which required great discipline) made a mockery of their enemies. Greek pikemen, for example, were horrified at the efficiency in which the Roman soldiers cut them down if they managed to break through the pike hedge.
as far as one on one swordsmanship, if I had to go to a duel tomorrow, I would take a rapier. Rapiers survived the gunpowder era and were the defensive sidearm of choice until the invention of the six-shooter. They were lightning fast, lightweight, and the stabbing motion has always been more effective than a slash at causing mortal wounds.
If I were to train to use a sword in self-defense, hands down the Katana. Katanas can be swung remarkably fast, the weight of the blade adding to the cutting power and speed of the strike, while their shape still allowed for an alarmingly effective stabbing motion. Japanese weaponsmiths used to test their new swords against a stack of corpses. If the blade failed to slice through all of them, the sword was discarded. It took an extreme amount of discipline to master the Katana, but masters were virtually untouchable.
