I am studying poems and I would like your help please as I will have similar poems on a future test.?
Please can you help me analyze this wonderful poem?
It is called
"The Pay Wickets"
to my dear papa
in sanitized gown between
hard sheets buried
in a codeine sleep
dear papa, I know
you'd rather be betting #3 and #7
in the Quinella and you'd rather
be dressing in leather
belt and boots, tailored, rather be
choosing your hat and bolo tie
the one you braided and cut antler bone to finish
papa, you'd be betting #3 and #7 in the 10th, no doubt, and
making a big-hearted bet, more than your hands could hold
anyway, you'd bet, testing the odds, once more
just one more time before
the wickets closed, the pay
wickets closed."
What is the theme here?
What is the meaning here?
and who is the poem being written too?
your help is appreciated:)
Thank you
Reference to papa may be Italian
The bet is horse racing I think
He bets too much
Seems to me that this is a child (adult child) that is talking about their father. He is dead or in a coma or something. He likes to bet the horses but he bets too much. The ending of the peom would suggest to me that he is alive but dying and in a coma.
The poem comes off a bit weird to me.
