What do you think the max length for a fixed blade knife is, before it becomes a machete. I carry a 7 1/4" bowie, which gives me good length, but I still have control. The military KA-BAR is 7'' long.
Blade length is all about what you plan on using it for, the strength and size your hand can grip properly and control, and how practical it has to be. For self-defense and or having to throw, I go with an Arkansas Toothpick with a 7 1/2 blade. It has good balance, and the handle itself plams nicely to spin the knife in one hand with out any awkward motions. For more practical use outdoors and indoors, I have a Buck lockback in 5 inch, which can be used to skin and gut, and for everyday chores, and much easier to handle for first aid in case of emergency.
