Can I carry a combat knife across the Canadian-American border (please read the details)?
I am planing a 500+ mile walk from central Washington to BC. I will be carrying a knife with a 6 inch blade on my belt as a general-purpose tool as well as for my safety in the Northwest wildernesses. If I declare the knife in my posession at the border, will I be allowed to carry it across?
@leafer: I was thinking more for protection from wildlife (though apparently, it won't help except against squirrels lol), not people, but thanks for the advice!
@capitalgentleman: It says "United States Army" on the blade, and has the Army emblem. Could this be a problem in saying that it is a tool, rather than a weapon? I'll also be packing a military ALICE pack. Would the two look suspicious together? Haha fwiw, I keep a flint in the sheath...
@old lady: I'm going to the Kamloops area. See, there's this girl I know... :} I don't know what happens when I get there. Keep your fingers crossed for me, will ya?
In Canada, it is illegal to carry ANY weapon for self defence. This includes knives.
However, a utility knife, especially for camping, is perfectly acceptable. The tricky part is when is a given knife a tool, and when is it a defencive weapon. This can be a judgment call by the police/border authorities.
I would suggest that for a trek like your, the knife would be seen as a utility knife, depending on it's design. You should not have a problem, especially as you will obviously be hiking.
As a licensed Wilderness Guide in the Yukon though, I have to say that a 6" knife won't protect from very much! Great for making an emergency shelter, cutting up a fish, or making fire starters, but, for anything bigger than a squirrel, it won't help much.
