There are many Americans who feel that black history month simply shouldn't be. My understanding of black history month is that its importance has to do with an attempt to correct a lopsided kind of teaching that in the United States,(the UK and other countries may be different) which excludes the contributions of blacks. We all learn about Thomas Edison but the mention of Benjamin Banneker, Granville T. Woods or a Lewis H. Latimer might make the average American student say, "Who?", when it shouldn't.
OK, so my question is: for those who feel that Black History Month is wrong or shouldn't be, would you be willing to simply incorporate figures like Mary McLeod Bethune's, The Annie Lee, or Phillis Wheatley into the normal history classes or do you feel that blacks are already proportionally represented in History textbooks throughout the country?
I have nothing against Black History Month, in fact I enjoy the theme of the month.
