question about carrying a sword around in public?
well, ive been wondering for some time now if it was legal to carry a sword around (a katana for instance) it would be kind of weird if it were illegal... considering you can carry a gun. i know a sword seems a bit extreme, but i would think a gun is more dangerous. do you know if thats legal? (i live in ohio if that helps)
and what about rubber swords? such as the cold steel o bokken?
thanks a bunch!
and your opinions are really appreciated.
cheers
Andrew
Ohio's laws with regards to weapons being carried state that if a "prudent man" would have a weapon under your circumstances then it is legal. However that does not prevent an officer of the law from confiscating the weapon (and packing it home). It just really gives you some legal footing to operate under. However this has certain stipulations. For instance being under the age of 18 is likely to get you into a great deal of trouble with regards to this and you will probably loose your weapon. As far as practice weapons they are bound by the same principle and are legal for someone under 18, but if you are horse playing with it or brandishing it in public odds are it will get confiscated at a minimum. The general rule of thumb is that if the item is legal at your age and you are traveling to or from a function where it is logical for you to have the weapon then odds are that it will be OK or at the worst you will be required to prove your affiliation with a martial arts school to get it back. But this is for states with the prudent man law. In states with more stringent laws (or cities for that matter) you may be required to get some kind of permit (concealed carry permit in KY for instance to have a sword in the car). But I'm not a lawyer and this information is from when I lived in OH in the late 90s. It may have changed since then.
