(El Dia de los Muertos)
(Optional) Please Also tell me what The Day of the Dead (El Dia de los Muertos) have in *common* with these other holidays:
Christmas
Valentine's Day
Memorial Day
Easter
and
Thanksgiving
During the time of Oct 31st to November 3rd the barrier between the spirit world and the living world is supposed to be nonexistant. In old times it was believed that spirits would raise from the dead and wander around to return to the homes that they once lived. Frightened villagers would try to appease these wandering spirits by offering them gifts of fruits and nuts. That is how Halloween trick or treating originated. Now, children dress in costumes and go door to door for candy. El dia de los muertos is celebrated by mainly people of Mexican origin. Because the barrier between the living and spirit world is believed to be lifted during this time, they believe that their loved ones will return on these days so many will decorate their graves or build a shrine to them in their home and offer some of their favorite things while they were living including food and drinks. In Mexico, November 1st is the day that everyone celebrates and mourns for babies and children and November 2nd is the day that all dead loved ones are celebrated and remembered.
What the day of the dead has in common with the other holidays:
Christmas- special offerings are given to honor the dead much like gifts are given to loved ones on Christmas.
Valentines Day- the Day of the Dead is based around our love for the departed much like Valentines day is a celebration of love.
Memorial Day- The Day of the Dead is a day to remember all what our deceased family and friends have done for us and celebrate their lives much like we remember our fallen soldiers.
Easter- Christians celebrate the return to life or rebirth of Christ much like Mexicans celebrate the return of the spirits of their loved ones.
Thanksgiving- Thanksgiving is celebrated by being thankful for all you have in your life. Day of the Dead is about being thankful to your loved ones who are passed on.
