From what I remember, they were making immense Moai to please the gods, but in order to move the immense carved creations from the quarry in which they were built, they used palm trees to ease the transport to the coast. The deforestation caused the ground to collapse and form dust clots which prevented plant growth for fruits and vegetables. Herbivores died or were completely consumed by the people of the island, then there was no food left so they turned tocannibalismm.
