What should I do during horse lessons? I need some entertaining ideas.?
I am giving begginning lessons to a nine year old girl and her mom. We have a small arena with a round pen plopped in the middle of it. They ride a very lare ex-jumping thoroughbred. I have them doing transitions, working on their posting form, small patterns such as figure eights, and some pole work, because believe it or not, their ex-jumper is afraid of ground poles. They also work on bridling and releasing pressure, etc. What can I do to make their lessons more fun for them, and not seem so repetitive. Is there a fun way to use ground poles and cones? Any and all suggestions are welcome!
You could try doing gymkhana patterns.
Such as:
Arena race
Pole Bending
Key Hole
Clover Leaf
Flag race
You could time them and have them race for fun
Personally I really like to use pole bending as you have to weave the horse through, keep him moving. Its a lot for a beginner but really teaches control.
I take and put a rain coat on a fence post and have them pick it up and put it back. Open mail boxes, stuff like that.
