What's a good fountain pen to get?
I need help deciding. I like fine nibs and I don't want to spend too much. I'll be using it primarily for my writing (I'm a writer) and I'll be taking it with me while I travel.
I've never owned a fountain pen before so this will be my first one.
I don't like excessively flashy pens that suggest an overcompensation for other... short comings (if you get my meaning)
But I'd like something edgy and sexy (I'm 23 so anything that looks like something my grandfather would use is right out) also.
Price is an issue too. I don't want to spend too much for my first one but I don't want to go cheap and settle for some miserable throwaway either. Around 100-150 dollars perhaps?
Finally, I'm living currently in the Philippines so if you could suggest the make and model as well as where I may purchase it I'd be much obliged.
Thanks!
From your description, it sounds like (1) you want quality, both in terms of the "writing experience" and long-term usability, and (2) modern design, meaning something that, aesthetically speaking, looks forward, not backward.
The only brand that makes since in this case (IMO, of course), is Lamy. I've been using their fountain pens for years, and have been quite happy with them.
The two pens I would recommend right off the bat are the Lamy 2000 fountain pen, and the top-end version of the the Lamy Studio fountain pen. Both are more or less within your stated budget, both are unique in design, and both are wonderful writers. I have more experience with the 2000: it fills only from a bottle (piston-fill), meaning it doesn't have the ease-of-use like a pen that uses disposable cartridges, but on the upside has higher ink capacity than almost all cartridge-fillers, allowing for more writing between refills, which I personally find more convenient. Filling from a bottle is also more economical, generally speaking, and, for what it's worth, also "greener": the bottle you'll be filling from is almost always glass, which is recyclable, meaning minimal waste.
Give these pens a close look, then try writing a bit with each. Good luck!
