How can I get my dog to drink more water?
I took my dog( a two year old shih tzu) to the vet for a regular check up. They also ran a urine test. The result was fine. But my vet told me that it looks like my dog had a lot of crystals in her urine, which means she does not drink enough water. I had noticed that she doesn't drink a lot of water before, but didn't know it could be so serious. My vet told me that a water fountain might encourage her to drink more water.
The problem is that I can't feed her wet food, since it gives her diarrhea. I have tried almost all high quality brands, and none pf them work for her. She is a very picky eater, too. So if I add water to her dry food, she won'tt eat it.
Does anyone has any experience about this? How can I get her to drink more water? Will a water fountain be a solution?
I will appreciate your response.
When I have a convalescing dog, that needs to drink more, I give them low sodium chicken broth, or boil a few chicken livers in a pan of water, and make the liver broth for them. They always love the liver broth.
Then, if you do this at specific times daily, you should get her on a habit of drinking at those times, and gradually exchange the broth for water. .
You could also make her Knox Blocks for treats, using Knox gelatin and broth.
Heat 3/4 cup of broth in a pan to barely boiling.
* Put 1/4 cup of cold water into a bowl. Sprinkle 2 envelopes Knox unflavored gelatin into the cold water. Wait about 1 minute for it to soften.
* Pour the broth mixture over the gelatin/water mixture, stir until gelatin is dissolved (about 5 minutes). Pour into an appropriately-sized container with flat sides, put in the fridge for 3 hours.
Cut into small squares, store in a ziplock, and keep cool until used.
This is liquid by volume, but only Gelled. (We used this as a water replacement for a dog that choked on plain water due to soft palate damage)..
