How fast would a knife wound to the kidneys kill you?
Say a bowie knife was stabbed into your right kidney and twisted a bit. How fast would you die? Minutes? Longer? Would it be from blood loss or something else? Would you pass out first, or die instantly? I'm asking because it happened as a cliffhanger on a TV show I watched recently, and I want to know how realistic it is that he's really dead.
When an injury is severe (as with a bowie knife), the kidney may be lacerated so bad that urine may leak into the surrounding tissue. If the kidney is torn from its attachment to blood vessels, bleeding may be profuse, resulting in shock or death within minutes. A person can live with only one kidney if the kidney fails to recover from the injury but treatment cannot be delayed.
