Has anyone had success with Government Grants without shelling out a fortune?
Recently I purchased a "Getting Started Kit" that promised me a grant in 90 days or my money back. ($24.95) So I sent a well-thought out letter to 100 different addresses from Florida to Hawaii. So far 26 letters have come back to me "Return to Sender" or "Address Unknown". Only 2 Foundations were kind enough to write me back and tell me that their Foundations have been disbanded for YEARS!! So basically the List of Addresses this company sent me is bogus!! I guess my question is are there any legitimate organizations out there that won't take advantage of a needy person and actually do as they promise? Has anyone out there ever successfully received a government grant? How did you do it? How long did it take? Please leave your email address so I can contact you further. Any information will be greatly appreciated. God Bless.
Selling lists of organizations supposedly offering grants have been the modus operandi of scammers for years now. I remember way back in 1998 or 1999 the show 20/20 did a feature on this and they bought a list and they sent requests for grants to those in the list -- only to get the same results as you did.
These scammers are preying on people's beliefs that some magical free money exists somewhere ready and waiting to be taken. But that's not how grants work -- both federal and private foundation grants.
Grants are free, but it means OBLIGATION. You will be obligated to do as the grant sets out to do. Grants have objectives, and your purpose must fit the objective of the grant.
For one, you have to write the grant application and the grant application is not a simple document - you have to explain how your purpose for applying for the grant fits well with the objectives set out by the grant.
There is a stringent review process through a committee. You will compete with other applicants for the grant money, and this grant review committee will evaluate the merits of each proposal. Only those that they feel exemplifies the objective of the grant will be approved.
The government as well as private foundations are NOT in the business of giving away free money for the sake of giving away money. There are no grants for paying bills, no grants for paying off credit cards, no grants for getting out of debt and no grants for simply fattening your wallet.
You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes. Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.
For private foundation, the most reliable source is the Foundation Center -- which is a well respected organization in the field of philantrophy. They have a Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices."
