Grit Knife Blades

Grit Knife Blades
how can i sharpen an ordinary kitchen knife to be use for shaving?

im planning on making my own strait razor out of a hacksaw blade and so far ive got the shape i want down and its got a fairly sharp edge on it. ive already took care of heat treating and quenching the blade but i cant seem to get it any sharper. i was thinking it might be a good idea to make a japanese style edge where it only has an angle on one edge but i don't know if that would be a good idea because id prefer a western style edge if i can get it sharp enough. also i don't know how to sharpen properly or what grit to use or weather to use oil or water. can some one out there help me. it would help if whoever is answering actually knows what they are doing, have done a very smiler project before, or are a professional. if it helps the blade is curved. thank you

Hi, im a luthier which uses sharpening equipments professionally and a razor lover. Believe me, it would be such a waste of money and time for somebody like you who doesnt know anything about sharpening and willing to make a razor from an ordinary kitchen knife.

But if you are stubborn that much, you should know that steel qualities of the ordinary kitchen knives are just crap. Whatever you do, it would not make a decent straight. Also you would need some high quality equipment for sharpening it, like some grades of waterstones like 2000-4000-8000-12000grits and then some diamond paste and a high quality leather strop. That would cost about 2 nice quality straight razor.

If you ask me, just go and buy a dovo straight. You can send it to a honemeister for sharpening it. Don't forget that straight razor needs to be honed and stropped regularly, early or later it gets boring. So best thing to do would be buying a Sanguine shavette which uses any regular double sided razors from ebay. It would not cost much and would give you a fantastic shave.

I use both shavette and straight, and they are not so dangerous as other commentators stated, but if you have never used a straight before, its best to start with a shavette. Because a shavette can't cut you deep, but a straight can.

If you have calm and careful hands shaving with them is not much diffucult than trying too peel a patato delicately, not joking.

Hope this helps.
