Need help with a history question!!?
"How did the way in which European colonialists carved up Africa in the 1800s lead to civil strife in many new African nations?"
It caused lots of civil war between countries, right? or something like that...I don't remember...
I can't figure this out.
Any history whizzes out there who can lend a hand?
I'm not an expert, but I know that they didn't take into consideration many of the existing political and cultural differences between tribes. Territories that had long been established between ruling tribes were no longer relevant as far as European colonialists were concerned. In addition to the scramble for control of natural resources and land, the people of Africa were treated as further commodities. The prejudices established during this time period are directly responsible for Apartheid, and the overall oppression of black Africans that still exists today. Due to the carving up of the continent by England and other colonial nations at the time, people who may have had huge cultural differences or long-standing feuds with other tribes were thrown together without consideration. After the decline of colonialism, this left countries filled with people who had little in common who were expected to govern themselves despite their differences. Imagine, another country coming along and saying, okay United States and China, despite the fact that China is a communist nation and the US is a democracy, you are now one nation--figure out a way to make it work. Chances are civil war would break out, right? Maybe this will give you a jumping off place for consideration.
