I have an old knife that looks really cool. But the person that had it before me had it in their basement, and the sheath and handle (being metal) got completely covered with rust. They have designs etched or painted (cant tell) on the handle and sheath, so I don't want to ruin them. Any ideas on how to get the rust off (besides vinegar, already tried that, and it got some off) would be helpful. Thanks!
I TOTALLY DISAGREE with the other comments about using any kind of chemicals on the knife. 1. it could destroy or ruin the etching or painting. Please talk with a knife professional. If they mention chemicals then they are not truly a pro. Benjamin Berg of Tora Custom Knives can send you a before and after photos of a knife that he removed the rust from. If the knife is one you value I recommend sending it to Tora Hawaii for polishing. The owner Benjamin Berg is a great guy to work with. There would be a small fee for the polishing and you would pay for shipping both ways.
