For what purpose might a Japanese-style pattern be used for?
I have to design and find a purpose for an ethnic pattern (I chose Japanese) and state how much it would cost to manufacture. I've thought of origami paper and fans but origami seems to simple and obvious, and I have no idea how to find out how much it would cost to manufacture a 'sensu' silk fan.
Please help with suggestions! It needs to be something I can fairly accurately find out the price for online.
I love Japanese design and art, and I collect kimono and haori (kimono jackets). I think maybe you could take different approach with the design. If you are using an ethnic pattern, there are many Japanese designs that you could use and adapt for a different purpose. My point is, unless you are REQUIRED to make something from the particular culture that your pattern comes from, why not try something else? For example, I know several textile artists and clothing designers who take old kimono and obi and use parts of them in their own textiles and clothing (what you could call a form of "repurposing".) I have a wall-quilt made from various textiles plus pieces from an old man's haori. Again, that is using the design of the original in a new way.
You can find Dover books that have lots of Japanese patterns in them that you could use. You could make a wall hanging, you could make your own fans using different materials but a Japanese pattern; you could make something to wear that ISN'T a kimono but uses patterns from kimono.
How about making handbound a journal/book with the patterns and papers on the covers, then on each page hand drawing or painting a border or corner design that repeats part of the pattern from the covers?
If you'd like to talk a little more about this, please e-mail me through my profile. (I'd love to know what you come up with.)
