What colour Yukata looks good on western women?
I am going to Japan next year (march/April - around cherry blossom season) and would love to get a Yukata or other traditional yet casual outfit to wear. - I am going to Kyoto and I believe it is quite common to see westerners there wearing japanese dress.
What colours matches caucasian skin? My skin tone is pale but with pink tones.
I was thinking softer colours like bases with pink or red highlights. Or black with red highlights and a white belt?
I am female - I have redish-brown hair and brown eyes. 5"6 - small bust but small waist and larger hips.
I have done a bit or research already and I know Yukata are normally worn in summer and it could be a little cold to wear it, but I would love to wear something at least once.
Also any recommendations for places that will teach you to wear it properly?
I ment white based dress with pink or red highlights
You could get away with pretty much any color, really. A white or black base with a pink and red pattern is always nice. I would suggest a pink or red obi, though, not a pure white one. You would probably also look good in colors like dark blue or various shades of pink. I really don't suggest that you wear a yukata at any time other than the summer, though. Unless you really know what you're doing, it will just look like you made a mistake or are ignorant about wearing yukata (which you clearly aren't since you know they're summer clothes). There are lots of places in Kyoto that rent kimono for the day. Many hotels offer such a service, and I think one of the offices of the maiko henshin studio Yumekoubou also offers a kimono rental service. Usually when you use a service like that, they dress you themselves.
For buying a yukata, there are several places on Teramachi-dori that sell kimono and yukata. The one I have found with the best selection year-round is a small place upstairs, but they usually display kimono and accessories out on the street in front of the entrance to the staircase, so watch for them. You can look for a second-hand yukata (or other kinds of kimono) on the second floor of Chicago Harajuku, which is a recycled-clothing store. If you can't find someone to teach you to wear yukata, there are lots of videos and written instructions available online.
