How would you display these words on a blackboard when teaching students to make it easier categorize?
Going Shopping. a kilo of potatoes, rice, sugar, magazine, knife, knives, plastic bag, go shopping, buy bought, can tin, can-opener, sell, sold...
What categories would they be put into?Any ideas please?
If you are doing a categorization activity, the best way to do it is to print these words (with pictures - if vocabulary is an issue) on pieces of paper (you can use tables in Words to make nice even words) then cut them apart and put them in baggies. I suggest you make each set on a different color.
Then, give them the cards in their partner groups and tell them they have to sort them into 2 or 3 categories. You don't always have to tell them the categories. It is higher level for them to determine commonalities to create the categories. You might be surprised what they come with, as well. Then you can discuss the categories chosen and the process of the sorting.
Best Wishes!
