its called "polyester pearl". i want to build a knife with this handle material, but I'm skeptical. i am wondering if it will change shape or warp in different temperatures? like if i took a homemade knife with this material backpacking, in the winter, would it do anything to the shape? what about a hot summer day? basically I'm asking if it changes shape of warps under different climates.

Hey Marshall, anyways what you are looking at is nothing more than a petroleum based plastic. Nothing special (however neat looking).
This stuff will be fairly indifferent to temperature a.l.a.; will not warp under "normal" temperatures (don't dip it in liquid nitrogen, or set it in the sun for hours on end and you'll be fine).
If you polish it (I suggest taking it down on a buffing wheel with Tripoli or Rouge) after shaping it, it will most certainly be slippery... not fun when you're trying to hold onto the damned thing while it's wet... besides, $30 for a chunk of plastic? nuh uh. You can get some really nice wood for that price.
It's pretty, but I'd pass. Look into some nice curly maple, bubinga, cherry, etc. There are a whole lot of woods out there that are cheap. Hell, some people will give small scraps to ya for free.
