Flying to America. First time flier what do I need to know?
I am flying (from Heathrow) to Cleveland Ohio on the 2nd of November and returning on the 19th.
What advice can you give me? Can I take my Multi-tool Leather-man with me? Can I bring food with me? Do I need anything particularly? What restrictions are there on things to take over on board and in luggage? What are the weight restrictions on a AA flight?
Anything you can tell me would be great!
Thanks,
Dave

The rules for carry-on and checked bags are here:
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm
Pack a complete change of clothes and basic toiletries in your carry-on bag.
You can't bring fresh food into the USA. That includes fruit they may give you on the flight.
Each checked bag must be 50 pounds (about 22 kg) or less.
If you didn't already, you need to register for ESTA, print the confirmation, and have it in your carry-on along with your return air ticket and copies of any hotel reservations:
https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/
http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html
If you are traveling to the USA on a visa and not on the VWP then have all the documents in your carry-on.
Get to Heathrow so you are standing in line for check-in at least 2 full hours before your flight is scheduled to depart. Tag all of your luggage inside and out with your name (as it appears on the ticket), a phone number someone reliable will answer, your e-mail address, and your frequent flier number (join if you don't already belong to a partner program). The free tags from the check-in counter are fine.
The flight crew will distribute Immigration and Customs forms on the flight. Complete the forms before landing.
It doesn't appear AA flies non-stop from London/Heathrow non-stop to Cleveland you you have to change planes.
When you exit the aircraft in the USA go to Passport Control. You may not be asked anything, but be prepared to answer the following questions:
What is the purpose of your visit?
How long will you stay?
Where will you stay?
Don't lose the I-94 form the Immigration Officer will stamp and give back to you:

Baggage Claim is just after Passport Control. Collect your luggage (there should be carts) and take it to the Customs checkpoint. The Customs Officer will probably just take their form and wave you through. Interline Baggage is after Customs and you give your luggage to them for transfer to the nect flight. The follow the signs to your next flight. There will also be airline personnel around to give directions.
