Do female hula dancers wear wigs while performing?
I've been watching clips from Merrie Monarch Festivals on youtube (absolutely amazing performances!!). I noticed that almost all of the female dancers dancing kahiko have thick, long, dark hair that falls down to their behinds.
Not just a few individuals, but entire groups of women with this big, super long hair that is exactly the same length! Can it possibly be all natural? Or do some of the women wear wigs as part of their costumes when performing at festivals like Merrie Monarch?
Nope. My halau have been competing in Merrie Monarch since the beginning, and all our hair is natural. Hula dancers take pride in everything they do, that includes growing out our hair. Some halau only let you get your hair cut by your kumu (hula teacher), or only with permission.
