from some of my readings they were thought of as savages.... but I really don't know how to elaborate on that.
they went from being "savages" to being "Noble savages". Once they were no longer readily encountered, suddenly they were romanticized in such books as Cooper's leather-stocking tales.
Then you have a period of "realism" which treats then as any other character, based on real life experiences. You can find Indians in the short works of both Steinbeck and Hemingway. Background characters, rarely central ones.
Then you have the Dancing with Wolves era, where every Indian is suddenly such a Noble Savage that they are automatically Environmentalists, Wise mystics, & Heroes.
