What are the laws on assisted opening knives in CA and can anyone recommend a current mega folder?
Okay so I've read up on the laws about knife laws in CA. Switch blades and gravity knives are illegal, and from what I've read it seems like assisted opening knives are also illegal, but in many sites, it says it is legal, so I'm not really sure what the law is there. Can anyone explain exactly what it means then? Also, can anyone recommend a good mega folder such as the Rekat Sifu or the Cuda Maxx. Both of those are discontinued, so can anyone recommend one that is currently being sold? Thanks!
Oh also, I forgot to put this in the OP, but are pantographic knives legal to carry, and are they even still made?
There's lots of misinformation out there, especially for Cali. Here's the straight dope:
Switchblades and butterfly knives are considered the same thing under state law. However, they are NOT illegal. You can carry ones that have blades under 2" (which granted is tiny), and you can legally own at home (but not sell or carry) ones that are larger.
Assisted Opening knives are NOT switchblades under law, because the text of the law contains language that excludes them:
"a detent or other mechanism that provides resistance that must be overcome in opening the blade, or that biases the blade back toward its closed position"
Pantographic knives (props to you for using the correct term) technically are folders, but it is a violation to carry any folder with it's blade open already and locked in place. They are crap knives though, with a really inefficient opening mechanism and many are poorly made. You can still buy them though, under the name "German WWII paratrooper knife" (they were never used by Germans, or any paratroopers, but that's what their sold as)
Gravity knives by the correct definition basically have not been made for 50 years. A gravity knife works by holding it upside down and pressing a switch, which allows the blade to FALL into place, without any swinging motion. Germans really did use these in WWII (I have a real one), but they're not all that great and nobody makes them anymore.
Unfortunately, I cannot tell you were to buy a Rekat Sifu or Cuda Maxx. I've searched for a while, but no luck. I like the Sifu better for it's shape. If you want a mega folder though, maybe the Cold Steel Rajah? I have the 6" one, it is massive and very well made.
