College guys in pajamas vs. other sleepwear?
I was looking at some old pictures from the 50's and 60's of college men lounging in their dorm common rooms and noticed a few where all these gents were wearing pajamas and robes. I'm a freshman in college and none of the men on my floor wear pajamas. I sleep naked, as does my roommate, and I assume some of our floormates do too, and others sleep in boxers. When did it become popular for college men to sleep naked or in boxers instead of PJ's?
Yeah, I think they're definitely not "cool"--just the opposite: warm! As in they make me too warm to sleep, which is why I quit wearing them years ago!
Don't know for certain, but I'd say the trend began in the 60's and was full blown by the 70's. I began sleeping in the buff when I was 15, which was well before college. My college roommate (only had one for one year) slept in shorts and a t-shirt -- but I slept in the buff. I think he thought it was a bit weird, but I didn't care. I wasn't going to let another guy's thoughts keep me from being comfortable. It wasn't like I was parading around for all to see. I was just being comfortable. Out of college now, and have had to travel for business a couple of times and share a room with a co-worker (guy, and yes, separate beds). Slept in the buff then, too. That's just what I prefer!
