What was the significance of the dowager empress Tzu Hsi (Ci Xi) on China and the wider world?
Her roles in the boxer rebellion and the subsequent fall of the Qing dynasty I know are important however I don't know the overall significance.
Also, how else was she significant to the wider world?
This is all in relation to the start of the 20th C.
She prevented the Qing dynasty from preparing themselves from Western attack. She disliked Western influence and therefore, left China EXTREMELY weak and poor when it toppled. It was pretty much her fault for causing so much turmoil in the 20th century because so many factions rose up to take over after her death and left China in a lot of mess.
