After the skim coat-- how do I-?
I need to know how to apply the last finish coat to sheetrock.
A plumbing problem led to a hole needing to be cut in my dry wall. The plumbing is fixed and the sheetrock replaced, joints mudded and taped, skim coat applied, now I want to match the rock finish around it.
I know on pro jobs they use a spray "gun" to apply the rough finish then smooth it out with a blade, let it dry then sand it. Without that "gun" how do I get those little bumps and ridges?
I was thinking the I could just "flick" the mud onto the wall, but I can see that as time consuming and messy. I could really use a hand here with suggestions.

Still no idea how to do it.
It's very, very, very difficult to achieve the same texture without using the original method of applying the texture. You're going to have to do trial-and-error, and you may be able to get close enough.
If the repair is in an obvious place, and you want it to look good, the final answer is to scrape the old texture off as best you can, and skim coat everything with setting type joint compound. You can smooth it out, or make your own texture as an accent wall.
