Whats up with Anime fan participation today?
Today I noticed that fan participation in Anime seems to be seriously down from the mid-90's. I remember when the Sailor Moon community was in full gear, you could find hundreds of (assuredly) un-professional Sailor Moon websites,so many that some websites where dedicated to trashing them, and places like the Astronomical Sailor Moon Observatory and The Everchanging Sailor Moon Gateway that were heavily trafficked and well maintained existing in total symbiosis.
My question is, The newer generation of fans has better photoshop skills then we did, more website building resources, and the same zeal. Why havent shows like Naruto or Bleach, both wildly popular and succesful, acheived the same legendary level of fan participation that Sailor Moon did?
Is it because its easier for them to get more and more anime, and dont have the desire to participate in the same way, they would rather spend that time watching and enjoying more anime?
I think that back then we had few anime series to choose from. It seems like it was either Sailor Moon, DBZ or Pokemon.
Now that there are a lot more options, there are still plenty of fans, but they are just more diverse. Instead of having a million Sailor Moon sites, you might find a lot more sites devoted to different anime.
Also, it is easier to watch anime and read manga online. This might keep people so entertained that they don't have time to develop websites.
I go to anime conventions, and let me tell you...it gets more and more crowded each year.
