So i've got a massive project to find the weapons of some warriors. One warrior i have to look into is Richard the lionheart, who lead the third crusades to retake Jerusalem. I have to find a short range weapon a mid range weapon, a long range weapon, and a special unique weapon.
for short, i found the dagger, for mid i found the sword he used, and for long i found that lance the crusaders use. But i can't find a special or unique weapon could you please please help me thanx
I disagree with the first answer here, to call a crossbow a mid range weapon is naive. Ironically Richard was killed by a festering crossbow wound. At the shortest range, their armour could be considered a lethal weapon, battering with a shield or mail gauntlets, the horses used were also battle trained to bite and twist to avoid being hamstrung. Everything in a crusaders arsenal was a short range weapon. Swords are the obvious choice for mid range weaponry.
The longbow was never used to any great effect by the crusaders and remained a phenomenon isolated to the English lower middle classes.
The crossbow was used to great effect, especially by the Italian mercenary trading states, such as the Pisians or the Genoese.
Siege weaponry was greatly developed in the crusades, so a trebuchet or mangonel would serve the purpose on long range weaponry, but as these are classed under siege warfare, I would chose the crossbow. (side note: Crossbowmen at this time would have carried a pavise, a large rectangular shield to shelter behind whilst they reloaded.)
