I am looking to buy a Smith&Wesson BLACK OP Assisted Opening SWAT Knife (see link) and was curious so I looked up the law for PA (see second link). I was completly confused as it seems that they say it is illegal, but you can still carry a knife, a complet contradiction right? Anyway I was wondering if someone could decode it for me and tell me what it is saying in layman terms. Also could you tell me if it is illegal to carry around this knife in PA. Thanks guys.

What the ruling and law is stating is that if you do not have to use your fingers (see automatic knives, gravity knives, switchblades, etc.) then that is illegal. An assisted knife has a thumbstud which helps open the knife faster, but you still have to use your fingers. So the S&W knife appears fine. The only gray area are spring assisted knives. With spring assisted knives you merely nudge the thumbstud and the blade pops out. I know Kershaw makes them and maybe Camillus but I'm not sure. The S&W appears to be your standard knife with a thumbstud that "assists" in the deployment of the blade. It's fine, thumbstuds are quite common now. And yes knife laws are very confusing.
