Freemason symbols?
My friend gave me an old pocket knife she got at an antique shop. It's very simple, two blades, stainless steel, but it has a perplexing feature. On both sides are what look to be Masonic symbols. The top one looks like the all-seeing eye. The 2nd one is basically 2 vertical, parallel lines. The 3rd one is the square and compass with the letter G inside. The 4th one is a backwards L and a proper L side by side, back to back. The last one looks like a trowel or spade of some kind. I don't buy into any conspiracy theories, I'm just kind of curious as to what they mean, or at least what they are called. Thanks!
I did some research but couldn't find much. I'm more intrigued than suspicious, and I love to hear a good conspiracy theory, but I don't buy into them.
As has been mentioned, the eye is the all-seeing eye of Diety. Our actions cannot escape his watchful gaze, and everything we do or don't do is subject to His judgement when we die.
The other symbols are considered "working tools" of Masonry.
Plumb - walk uprightly before God and Man
Square and Compasses with "G" - standardized symbol of Freemasonry. Square = square our actions, compasses = keep us circumscribed and subdue our passions, G = Geometry (Operative Masons); God (Speculative Masons) - the focal points of operative and speculative masonry.
Level - meet and act on the level
Trowel - cement the fraternity in brotherly love
