KA-BAR knives, are they good?
The KA-BAR full size 7 inch. Is it stainless steel or carbon? Will these knives hold up well? Also, would you recommended I get the serrated or the plain edge?
What about the handle? should I get the wood or synthetic?
oh, whoops, you already answered. Is the one with the synthetic handle still the same quality of knife? I mean, still full tang, solid handle, right?
How is the handle leather and not decay? or get soft?
Good for what? General utility purposes? Hell yes.
Mine is carbon steel, it's tough, sharpens well and it will hold an edge great. Stainless is junk for knives.
Mine is the plain edge, serrated is a pain to deal with and generally not worth any benefit they provide compared to the hassle of upkeep. The serrations can also make it harder to get out moisture and keep in oil, giving rust a head start. I think a plain edge is almost always better. Any time you need the teeth you can use a saw instead.
You can always find a better knife for special purposes, but for general use outdoors I think the Ka-Bar is excellent. There is a reason they have been around for many years with very little change in design. Sturdy construction with quality materials. Be aware that the leather handle can degrade over time, so whether you get that or the newer style is up to you. I got leather because I like it better, but it takes more maintenance and can be a little slippery once in a while. There are many good knives, the Ka-Bar is not the be-all-end-all of greatness, but you can't go wrong with one.
EDIT: the handle isn't wood, it's stacked leather. And yes, the synthetic is just a good quality and made the same. I don't like the way it feels, but many people use them and love them. I personally prefer leather handle and leather sheath. I never go into the woods without it. Had a park ranger try and give me a ticket one time, but I talked her out of it.
EDIT AGAIN: A leather handle will decay eventually. It will happen sooner if you abuse your knife, or if you live next to the ocean or take it diving with you. Salt water has a tendency to destroy it. Generally speaking the oils from your hand will protect it pretty good, although it may begin looking dirty after awhile. Proper maintenance will keep it good for many years, but in the long run synthetics may last better.
