People need to stop thinking katanas are some magical weapons capable of amazing feats. European blades are just as capable of the things the Japanese weapons are. It just depends on the wielder.

There is just too much in there to prevent a clean slice. You've got all the guts and of course the spine to deal with. Go too low and you have the pelvis, go too high you have to deal with the ribcage. Even if you miss the skeleton the mass of the human body will slow the attack down too much to make a one cutting strike possible.
