My dad and I were cleaning the book cases out because we are having the carpets changed to wood floors, anyways, we came across this ancient Robinson Crusoe book written by Daniel Defo, and on the first page there is a message written in what looks like an old school style fountain or quil pen addressed to so and so 1854, and than that person who received it than passed it along to my grandpa in 1980, so it has been around a long time in the family, and we just happened to find it in our book case. When was the origianl copy written? The book said it was publicized in London: Robert Tyas, Paternoster Row MDCCCXL (Roman Numerals) It was illustrated by Grandville and other information... If it's from 1854, it's not 'the original copy'. The book was published in 1719. If you had a first edition from 1719, *that* would be worth a lot of money.
A copy published over a hundred years later isn't worth much. It's a nice thing to have, but not really valuable. It's probably worth about £15 - £20.
