Where would I attain wood blocks for carving?
I have several carving instruments already, and I have had plans to carve out a wooden ship model and a small statue, but I'm having trouble finding blocks of wood to actually carve it out of. I've looked at Home Depot, but they mostly sell large wooden planks and lumber, and even if I sawed those into smaller chunks the grain would not be ideal for carving. I'd like the wooden ship model to be large enough to be able to display above my fireplace or something, so the blocks sold on the internet that are like 2"x6"x6" wouldn't do. If anything, I'd like for it to be a cube?
Does anyone know where to buy wood blocks like that at a craft store or something? I live in Orange County, California and I would prefer not to buy things online, so names of stores in the area would be great.
Hobby Lobby and Michaels (at least some of them) sell basswood for carving in the form of planks and as a bag of small boards/blocks. I found that some stores have it and the people don't know, but they do know of the balsa wood display and it is right next to it when there.
Basswood is also sold through hardwood supply/woodworker supply stores and on line. It is a smooth tight grained wood used for carving for centuries.
