Yukata Obi Summer
Is it ok to wear obi belt with yukata?

Japanese summer festival this saturday! I'm not sure because I only have a kimono obi belt, like the one with the big solid bow (this one was already tied). Please help out, I don't want to look odd at the festival and have people saying, shes not Japanese cos shes not wearing it right and all that..
Thanks in advance ! x

There are many different types of pre-tied obi. This type is for a yukata: http://www.jlifeinternational.com/apparel/kimono/accessories/o-13.html If that's what you have then yes, you can wear it with your yukata. This type is for a kimono: http://www.etsy.com/listing/23779113/vintage-obi-360-pre-tied-black-with-red Technically speaking you should NOT wear that with a yukata. There has been a small trend lately towards dressing up a yukata a little by wearing kimono accessories with it. It's an attempt at bridging the gap in formality between the ultra-informal yukata and the more formal komon kimono (which is still very informal as kimono go). However, in order to do that properly, you need ALL of the proper kimono accessories: juban, obi, obi age, obi jime, obi ita, obi makura, tabi, and zori at the least, and you may also add a han eri (which you will absolutely need if your juban doesn't come with a nice collar of its own), and obi dome, and appropriate hair accessories. If you don't have the first kind of obi and you don't have the accessories required to properly wear the second kind of obi, you could see if you can make a third type of obi called a heko obi. These are soft obi that come in a variety of materials and sizes and range from short, lacy ones to be used as decorations with a yukata to heavier and much longer ones meant to be used as the obi my themselves, also with yukata. For a heko obi that's long enough to wear with a yukata, you will need one at least 4 yards long and 14 inches wide. You make need a longer obi depending on your own size, and you can measure this by using thread or yarn. Wrap it around your torso twice, then leave a long tail for the kind of bow you want. Cut the thread or yarn from the spool and measure with a ruler or tape measure. That's how much fabric you want. You can probably use any fabric you want for this, but solid colors are probably better and it's a good idea to stay away from the "Asian" brocades, other really shiny fabrics like satin, glitterball fabrics, and velvet. Consider using some of the fabrics in the dress section like crepe or some of the sheer fabrics. Remember that most Western fabrics come in pieces considerably wider than 14 inches, so you may want to buy about half of what you need, then cut the fabric in half length-wise and sew the two pieces together to make the obi rather than buying 4 or more yards of fabric. Either way, hem the fabric, and then you're done. Just make sure you do this as neatly as possible, since the edges of the hemmed fabric will show (and so might any parts where you sew fabric pieces together).
